Should I Try The Alkaline Diet

What Should My pH Levels Be?

This is an important foundation of the alkaline diet, and the ideas behind it. The pH value is a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is, and ranges from 0 to 14. Anything ranging from 0 to 7 is considered acidic, 7 is neutral, and 7 to 14 is alkaline, or basic. However, the pH value in people’s bodies varies greatly throughout. Some parts are alkaline and other parts are acidic. The stomach, for example, has hydrochloric acid in it, making it highly acidic, but this is an important digestive necessity in order to break down food. Blood, however, is always slightly alkaline, and it is extremely serious and sometimes fatal if it becomes acidic. Food cannot change your blood pH though, so what you eat has nothing to do with blood becoming acidic. It is only ever caused by a serious disease affecting its level.

And now that we’ve dusted off a lot of those cobwebs, let’s dig a bit deeper. Here’s how it works:

  • An acid can be defined as any substance that can lose a proton (or a hydrogen ion H+)
  • An alkaline substance (a base) can accept a proton (for example, hydroxide OH-)

(Note: You might remember from chemistry class that water is a neutral liquid (pH 7.0) because when water is broken down it forms H+ and OH-. A one to one ratio with an acid and alkaline)

Your body’s main buffer system uses something called bicarbonate in the process of maintaining your blood’s healthy pH, because bicarbonate can accept a proton and is therefore considered an alkaline substance. Bicarbonate is also stored in your bones, where it joins itself with calcium and sodium. Your body also uses the phosphate stored in your bones, joined with calcium, to act as a buffer. And in order to get these buffers doing their jobs, the bone minerals they are joined together with must be broken down.

Here’s a quick recap in case you got a bit lost in all the chemistry so far: Your body uses bicarbonate and phosphate to keep your blood at a healthy pH. Maintaining healthy pH levels in your blood is the whole purpose of the alkaline diet, and this may help you avoid some serious health issues.

How the Buffering System Works

Now that we’ve got the chemistry part down, let’s talk more about the relationship of our diet to the buffering of our blood’s pH. (Hang in there for just a bit longer – the practical “do’s” and “don’ts” are coming right up!)

Some foods have an acidic effect on the body and are taxing on the buffering system. Buffering takes place in the kidneys where the proton build-up from your blood is removed. (Did you know that kidney stones may occur at higher rates where a person has a more acidic diet? It makes perfect sense, since the kidneys have to work harder to buffer a higher acidic blood level. And if you know anyone that has had kidney stones in the past, you know they are just plain not fun.)

Because your bones may contribute as much as 40% of the needed substances (bicarbonate and phosphate) to deal with a high level of acid in the blood, there can be a high breakdown of bone minerals too. As little as one week of a high acidic diet may reduce the surface level of bone minerals, (Yikes!). So, while the buffer system maintains your blood’s pH regardless of what you eat, increased acidic food also increases the load it deals with and this can create fall out in other areas. Alkaline Foods Vs. Acid Foods

Measuring your pH balance

With the following little bit of chemistry knowledge, you can find out how your body’s buffering system is doing. The important question at hand is: are you in need of a lifestyle change toward an alkaline diet? (Well, we’re pretty sure that almost everyone may benefit tremendously from it, of course)

Let’s begin here: The pH scale goes from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Your body’s buffering system keeps your blood’s pH naturally maintained between 7.35 and 7.45. In fact, a slightly alkaline level of 7.40 is ideal. If you blood’s pH goes above 7.8 or sinks below 6.8 you can have serious health issues like the ones we mentioned above.

To find out about your own pH, you can measure it at home with litmus paper, which can be bought at most drug stores. Drop the tape into a container with a small amount of your urine. (Don’t worry, it’s not as gross as it sounds…) The tape will turn a color that you can then compare to the color chart on your litmus paper package. This color chart corresponds to the acid/alkaline levels—lower than 7 is acid, higher than 7 is alkaline. The test should be done several times to get an accurate reading, both early morning and during the day, continuing over several days since your pH levels may fluctuate over short periods of time. The numbers should not be consistently on the acid side (acidosis) or to far on the alkaline side (alkalosis). Ideally, You want to see an optimum level of 7.40 – which is our blood;s optimal pH level.

Now, before you go out and get yourself some litmus paper and venturing into new territory behind closed bathroom doors, have a look at the steps below which can be taken towards a healthy alkaline diet.

How to correct an over acidic diet

Something else you probably know already is that our contemporary American diet isn’t what is should be. So many foods we eat may have an acidifying effect on the body; processed foods, refined sugars, caffeine, alcohol, many prescription drugs and even too much meat. Is There a Difference?

You can tell from the label ingredients list, but sometimes you need to pull out a magnifying glass to read it and who can understand what it means? So, to spare you from having to sort through each ingredient, here are 3 simple guidelines to help you tell if your vitamin and mineral supplements are natural or synthetic imitations.

100% Natural

Manufacturers can add the word “natural” to their product label if as little as 10% of the ingredients come from natural food sources. Look for phrases such as: “100% natural” or, according to the Organic Consumers Organization, “100% plant based” or “100% animal based.” These are good signs!

Real Food Sources

Look for natural food sources on the label like yeast, vegetables, fruit or fish. If you can’t find them, the product contains synthetics. If the label’s list displays foods that are well known to contain the vitamin, rather than listing the name of the vitamin itself, it is more likely to be natural.

Learn The Additive Keywords

Synthetic salts may be added to vitamin and mineral supplements to increase stability. You can tell from the label when you see names like acetate, bitartrate, chloride, gluconate, hydrochloride, nitrate and succinate. They are all forms of salt, and if you have to read it twice to pronounce it, we recommend putting that package right back on the shelf.

Words that end in “ate” or “ide” indicate synthetic ingredients in the product, and if the letters “di” appear before the name of an ingredient, it is a synthetic.
