When giving advice to aspiring young athletes, professional soccer player Cameron Vickers can’t stress enough about the value of commitment.
Cameron may be able to hand in a blueprint to get newbies go where they want to go but it would serve useless if one fails to “understand what commitment looks like especially during rough times.”
“Being committed and motivated when things are going great is easy. It’s more about what you do when the opposite happens that really defines you,” he expounds.
Cameron debuted his soccer career in 2012 when he made his first appearance under Portland Timbers U23 of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Reserve League.
Since then, he has been putting in great amounts of time, effort, and dedication to become one of the many competitive professional soccer players in the country.
In 2019, Cameron’s hard work paid off after making it to the big league including the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) under the Philadelphia Fury.
“A lot of people don’t really understand the countless hours one has to put in to get into those levels. You have to fully dive in and be fully committed to all the works needed to be able to play professionally at the highest level,” reveals Cameron.
He admits that he was lucky to gain access to training not readily available to everyone. “I have incredible parents who have provided me with so many opportunities to pursue my sport. I also have an awesome group of coaches, including my sprint coach, my mental coach, and body work doctors. I’m super lucky to have a great group of people that holds me accountable through good times and bad to help me progress forward.”
However, it was during the tough times when Cameron was going through a lot in his life and athletic career that pushed him harder to do succeed.
“It’s the work that you have to do when nobody is looking that really matters,” he points out.
